What remains etched in my mind are the winding mountain roads wrapped in cool clouds, almost as if in heaven. Green, sloping stretches lined with silver oak trees, the fragrance of fresh tea leaves, and beautiful mountain huts become common sights on your road trip to Munnar, where you get to live amidst clouds.

Kochi to Munnar time by car: Around 4–5 hours, excluding sightseeing and meal breaks. Since the route is incredibly scenic, I’d recommend frequent stops and enjoying the way to Munnar.

This is the most popular and well-maintained route, taking you through spice plantations, forest stretches, charming villages and several waterfalls before climbing into Munnar’s tea-covered hills.
Road conditions:
The roads are generally excellent until the foothills. As you approach Munnar, expect winding mountain roads with sharp bends and occasional slow-moving traffic, especially during weekends and holidays.
Fuel and EV Charging Availability on the Kochi-Munnar Route (I support EVs)
Fuel stations are frequent until Adimali. Top up your tank there before entering Munnar, especially if you plan to explore Top Station, Marayoor or Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. EV charging infrastructure is limited but steadily improving around Munnar town.
Best time of the day to travel: Start between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. You’ll avoid city traffic, enjoy breakfast on the way, reach the waterfalls before the crowds, and enter Munnar during the most beautiful afternoon light.

June to September: Monsoon transforms Munnar into a lush paradise with roaring waterfalls and vibrant tea gardens, though frequent rain and fog can slow down driving.

Accommodations or hotels: Wherever you stay in Munnar, the backdrop guarantees you fairy-tale experiences. I stayed in one incredible hotel where every morning offered breathtaking views outside the glass doors. The Deshadan Mountain Resort, also referred to as the Highest Resort in Munnar. Its location was one of its biggest attractions. Perched at Pothamedu, Deshadan sits high above Munnar and looks across the surrounding mountains and tea-covered valleys. Waterfalls in Munnar
Cheeyappara Waterfalls
Gracing the Kochi–Munnar route, Cheeyappara Waterfalls tumbles down a series of rocky tiers surrounded by thick greenery. The mountain streams swell, and the water rushes down with considerable force during monsoons. It makes an excellent first stop on the drive. It marks the sudden transformation from Kerala’s plains into the lush Western Ghats.
Trivia: Plenty of roadside snack stalls await you near the fall.
Tip: A great stop to freshen up, refill, click pics and move ahead.
Valara Waterfalls
In a considerably wilder setting of forests and rocky cliffs, the milky-white Valara Waterfalls cascade down just a short distance from Cheeyappara Falls. The two waterfalls are conveniently located along the same road, making them ideal companions on your Kochi-to-Munnar drive
Tip: If you have rested at Cheeyappara Falls, just pass by this fall enjoying the view.
Attukad Waterfalls
This one is for the adventurers. The waterfall lies in a forested valley surrounded by mountains and tea plantations. During the monsoon, the water becomes particularly dramatic, while the surrounding landscape turns an intense shade of green.
Tip: Wearing good grip shoes is essential for Attukad Waterfalls. The final approach can be narrower and rougher than the main Munnar roads, so drive carefully and avoid venturing close to slippery rocks around the waterfall.
View Points in Munnar
Top Station
Situated at roughly 1,700 metres above sea level, this viewpoint in Munnar offers sweeping views across the Western Ghats towards Tamil Nadu. On a clear day, the valleys appear to stretch endlessly beneath you. On a misty morning, the clouds rise right in front of you as if fogging a huge stage for an unearthly performance.
Trivia: Plenty of magnificent views adorn entire Munnar, even from your accommodation. These spots are an escape with your loved ones to relax and savour the beauty you all discovered together by walking a few miles.
Tip: It will take time for you to reach the viewpoint; therefore, start early in the morning.
Lockhart Gap
The view you get at Lockhart Gap is tea plantations spreading across the slopes of mountain ranges. The name is believed to have originated from the shape of the gap between two mountains, which resemble a heart when viewed from certain angles. This is a less commercial viewpoint but very scenic and approachable.
Trivia: This place is remarkably quiet, probably not for kids who enjoy liveliness.
Pothamedu View Point
A sweeping panorama of tea, coffee and cardamom plantations is what you find at Pothamedu View Point near Munnar Town. This is an excellent place for sunrise or an early morning photography session.
Lakes and Dams in Munnar with Boating
Kundala Lake
A beautiful lake, bordered by mountains and lush green hilly islands. The calm water of Kundala Lake creates beautiful reflections when the weather is clear. The famous Kundala Arch Dam is also located here. Pedal boats and other boating options are available, depending on operating conditions. Plenty of snacking options and food stalls also line up by the lake.
Trivia: Set beside the lake, there is an Echo Point where a natural echo is produced by the surrounding hills. Call out towards the mountains and listen for your voice returning from the valley.
Tip: It’s an easy stop when exploring the Top Station route.
Mattupetty Dam
Mattupetty Dam is such a scenic reservoir which creates a beautiful expanse of blue against the surrounding mountains. The Dam is surrounded by forested hills and is one of the most popular stops close to Munnar. Boating is available when conditions permit.
Tip: Mattupetty can be combined with Echo Point and Kundala Lake as part of a single sightseeing circuit.
Munnar Tea Gardens and Museum
This is the sight that makes Munnar instantly recognisable. Miles of meticulously maintained tea bushes cover the mountainsides, creating undulating patterns of green. Numerous spectacular tea estates are spread all over Munnar. Some popular commonly visited spots migt entail longer drives. My research here gives you the best of both worlds. I suggest the most immersive, eye-catching tea gardens and factory that fall within your driving circuit.
Lockhart Tea Factory, Trail, Tasting and More
I chose Lockhart as it is particularly interesting because the factory is still operational, rather than being merely a museum displaying old machinery. The factory dates back to 1936 and produces orthodox tea using traditional processing methods.
“Make Your Own Tea.”– This unusual experience here places this attraction on top. Participants can actually go into the plantation, learn tea plucking, follow the leaves through stages such as withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and sorting, and eventually taste tea made from the leaves they helped process. Participants are also given their own packet of the tea they produced. Other activities include:

Eravikulam National Park
Watching wildlife in the Western Ghats is a different experience altogether. Munnar is famous for its Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain ungulate found along the rocky slopes of southern India’s highlands. This National park welcomes you with spectacular views of the shola forests, rolling grasslands, steep mountain faces and mist-covered valleys. The park also encompasses the region around Anamudi, the highest peak in South India.
Trivia: Nilgiri Tahr are sure-footed animals that navigate steep rocky slopes with astonishing ease. They are beautifully adapted to the high-altitude terrain and are one of the signature species of the Western Ghats.
Tip: Access and timings can be restricted during certain periods, particularly during the Nilgiri Tahr calving season. Check the current park rules before planning your visit.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
This could be an addition to your itinerary if you have a longer vacation. It differs from the earlier Munnar experiences. Chinnar lies in a relatively rain-shadowed region, creating a drier forest ecosystem with its own distinctive flora and fauna. You may spot elephants, gaur, spotted deer, sambar, langurs and a variety of birds.
Trivia: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Come for the forest experience rather than expecting a particular animal.
Tip: Destinations like these parks become fun when you add activities like trekking, photography, camping, etc.
Insider: Another park for an evening family outing with kids located near the Munnar–Mattupetty route is Blossom Hydel Park. What you can expect here are gardens, walking areas and recreational activities, with the surrounding hills providing a beautiful natural backdrop.
And here I conclude revealing an interesting fact, no one might have told you. A secret, busted by the hills themselves. Neelakurinji, one of Munnar’s most remarkable natural spectacles, blooms only periodically, carpeting the mountains in shades of blue and purple. Top Station is particularly famous for this phenomenon. It blooms once in 12 years!. The last significant bloom was in the year 2018 and is anticipated again in the year 2030. So, if you are reading this post in 2030, pack your bags!
