A few years ago, if someone had told me that some of my most memorable travel experiences would happen without a passport, I probably wouldn’t have agreed.

Like many people, I grew up believing that extraordinary experiences existed somewhere else. In a distant country. On an exotic island. In a place that required months of planning and a significant dent in the bank account.
What I didn’t realize was that India itself was quietly changing.
Not through advertisements or patriotic slogans.
But through roads, connectivity and access.
Through thousands of destinations that suddenly became reachable.
And somewhere between one weekend drive and another, I found myself falling in love with my own country.
India Is Easier to Travel Than It Has Ever Been
Some of the journeys that once felt exhausting are now surprisingly comfortable.

Routes that used to take an entire day are now just a couple of hours’ affair. Highways are smoother. Fuel stations are frequent. Food options no longer mean settling for packed junk; rather, good quality, freshly cooked Indian flavours along the way.
Today, a road trip can include clean washrooms, reliable navigation, well-lit rest stops, cafรฉs serving excellent coffee, charging stations, emergency services, and accommodation options that range from luxury resorts to charming homestays.
In many ways, a weekend drive out of the city feels less exhausting than the daily commute to work.
That’s a remarkable transformation, and it has changed the way Indians travel. Vacations are no longer limited to carefully planned week-long escapes. They can begin on a Friday evening, with a sudden urge to leave the routine behind and drive towards a beautiful spot nearby, because such places do exist, often much closer than we imagine.
The New India Is Hidden Beyond the Famous Destinations
Most people already know Goa, Manali, Jaipur, etc.
But what about the hundreds of places that don’t appear on every travel brochure?
The lakes hiding between mountain ranges or the forest villages where the night sky still belongs to the stars.
The riverside camps where mornings begin with mist rising over the water, and the grasslands that look like scenes from another continent.
The roads seem designed purely for driving, claiming their existence among travellers. Many are still untouched by crowds or remain unknown even to experienced travellers.
And perhaps that is what makes discovering them so rewarding.
Travel Has Become an Experience, Not Just a Destination
One of the biggest changes I have noticed is that travel in India is no longer just about reaching a location. It is about how you experience it.

You can now:
- Camp beside a lake under a sky full of stars.
- Enjoy bonfires with fellow travellers.
- Watch open-air movie screenings in remote locations.
- Take scenic cruises through backwaters and rivers.
- Ride motorcycles through some of the highest roads in the world.
- Stay in eco-friendly forest retreats.
- Experience barbecue evenings overlooking valleys and lakes.
- Work remotely from the mountains, beaches, and countryside.
These experiences were once associated with international travel. Today, they are available across India, each unique and wonderful, often at a fraction of the cost.
A Different Kind of Wellness
There is another reason this matters. Modern life is exhausting. We spend our days staring at screens. We live between deadlines, notifications, meetings, responsibilities, and endless scrolling. Many of us are not looking only for luxury but relief, as well. We are looking for stillness and for moments when the mind becomes quiet again.
Some extraordinary ideas, or clarity, arise at a sunrise beside a lake, a silent mountain road or in a mysterious forest. A conversation around a campfire can bring lost moments of togetherness back. What’s better expected of a vacation? These experiences do more for recovery than most people realize.
Travel is not always an escape from life. Sometimes it is how we reconnect with it.
Why Domestic Tourism Matters
One thought that I strongly believe in is that we often underestimate how much of India we have yet to discover.

In times when travel conversations are dominated by international destinations, it is easy to overlook the extraordinary experiences waiting much closer to home. Some of the most beautiful landscapes, unique cultures, memorable road trips, and life-changing travel experiences are right here in our own country, often just a few hours away.
It was encouraging to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reiterate the importance of exploring and supporting domestic tourism. It is certainly a sentiment I relate to, not because travelling within India is an obligation, but because it is an opportunity.
An opportunity to discover places that rarely make it to mainstream travel lists. An opportunity to support local communities and small businesses. An opportunity to experience a side of India that many of us have never seen, despite living here all our lives.
Sometimes the most rewarding journeys are not the ones that take us across oceans, but the ones that help us appreciate the incredible diversity, beauty, and experiences that already exist around us.
I began writing this blog to share my life experiences, journeys and long drives, as friendly guidance stories. And, definitely, will share my travel experiences across the different countries. This little piece of content was an expression of the excitement I am experiencing while travelling within India, which many fellow Indians would be carrying in their hearts too.
If this article inspires even one person to step away from routine, take that long drive, explore a place they’ve never heard of, or simply see their surroundings with fresh eyes, then it has served its purpose. After all, the best travel advice rarely comes from a brochure. It comes from a friend returning from a memorable journey, excited to share the story.
Long Drive Short Trip will continue to uncover those places, experiences, drives, stays, and hidden gems that make us fall in love with travelling and long drives.
