Leh to Pangong Tso Drive: Routes, Sights & Unforgettable Nights (2026)

There’s a certain magic that draws bikers to the mountains, a pull stronger than wanderlust, quieter than fear, and broader than the horizon itself. I felt it the day I packed my bags in Leh, tightened the straps on my helmet, and instinctively knew this ride would reshape the lines of my memories. My journey from Leh to Pangong Tso was my first long bike ride ever.
I headed with the morning wind kissing my face as the engine growled to life, and with every turn of the wheel, I felt a little more alive. The world behind me began shrinking into stillness, and ahead, the open road unfurled like a promise. This wasn’t just another destination; it was a symphony of solitude and splendour, played on the raw, rugged roads that lead to Pangong Tso, a lake so blue it feels like a dream reflected in reality.

These were quick tips, but as you read on, you get a complete mental picture that will get you excited about your vacation in Leh and Pangong Tso, including the drive.

Though my choice of vehicle was a bike, the roads to Pangong Tso do not limit you to it. Cars are equally welcome and enjoyable for this adventurous long drive. In fact, only after a little nudge from one of the Bike Rentals, my partner and I decided to give it a go and experience our first long ride together.

Passing on the Bike Recommendation

It may seem difficult.
It may push your limits.
But the journey will stay with you far longer than any comfortable car ride.

Truth is, it is doable and if you do bike around and like it, you will cherish this ride. It is even more economical than car rentals.

Travel Time: Approximately 6 hours each stretch, depending on road and weather conditions. With breaks, photos, and altitude halts, consider longer.

Best Time of the Day to Travel: Start early in the morning, around 6 AM.
The air is crisp, roads are quieter, and the golden light falling on the mountains makes you forget sleep deprivation.

Best Time of the Year to Travel: Late June to early July (when I went) was perfect.
Clear blue skies. Manageable roads. The lake in its full blue glory. Monsoons can make water crossings aggressive.
Winters freeze Pangong completely- stunning but extreme.

Altitude Note: Khardung La stands at over 18,000 ft. Oxygen levels drop significantly. Mild dizziness or breathlessness is common. Acclimatise in Leh for at least 48 hours before attempting this ride.

Connectivity: Expect little to no phone network for most parts of the journey.

The Ride Begins, Leh Market & The First Roar

Leh Market is where the adventure quietly begins. Rows of powerful bikes, especially the ever-reliable Royal Enfield Bullet, stand ready like soldiers awaiting command.

Leh Market quietly prepares you for the adventure ahead. Vendors don’t just rent bikes; they motivate you. They brief you about fuel points, road patches, weather changes, and water crossings. They look at you and say, “Madam, this ride will stay with you forever.”

And they were right.

It is where travellers gather their excitement, their supplies, and sometimes even their courage before setting out into the vast Himalayan wilderness. The market comes alive with a fascinating mix of cultures, languages, and travellers from across the world. Small cafés release the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee, local bakeries tempt you with warm breads, and colourful Tibetan shops display prayer flags, woollen shawls, handcrafted souvenirs, and traditional jewellery. Walking through the lanes, you will hear conversations about mountain routes, road conditions, and weather updates, almost as if the market itself is briefing you for the journey ahead. What makes Leh Market truly special is the sense of anticipation that lingers in the air. Travellers walk through its streets knowing that within a few hours they will be riding through some of the highest roads in the world. Helmets are strapped, bikes are fueled, maps are discussed, and hearts beat a little faster.

Strapping on riding gloves for the first time and adjusting the helmet strap. Even at the pillion seat, the thrill heightened as the engine roared. That first acceleration out of Leh, I still remember the butterflies.

My Stay in Leh

I stayed at Jimmy’s Homestay, have beautiful memories of my interactions with the fellow travellers, their guidance for the trip ahead, and opening the wine bottle in my room after the return. If you plan to rent a bike and start the ride to Khardung La, Nubra Valley, or Pangong Tso, staying near Leh Market is extremely convenient. Most bike rental shops, cafés, travel agencies, and permit offices are within walking distance, making it the perfect base before the adventure begins.

My Stay in Pangong Tso

Staying near Pangong Tso is unlike any other accommodation experience in India. At an altitude of over 4,300 meters, the stays here are designed to help travellers experience the raw beauty of Ladakh rather than luxury in the conventional sense. You can always book the camps when you reach, there are plenty. I stayed at the Pangong Retreat Camp.

Lakeside Camps & Boutique Retreats

• Pangong Resort & Camp– Located very close to the lake shore, this is one of the well-known luxury tent stays in Pangong. The resort offers comfortable tents and rooms designed to provide warmth and comfort in the harsh high-altitude climate while still letting guests enjoy uninterrupted views of the lake.

Attractions and activities

Khardung La- On Top of the World

The ride began early morning, 6 AM, with a few bites of an energy bar. The first, most prominent stop in this ride was Khardung La Pass. Though you can never sell short the selfie stops on the way, look up for mine. The views on the way are spectacular. I am proudly an Army Wife, therefore, every Army camp we passed along the way stirred a deep sense of admiration in me, each post silently narrating stories of courage and resilience in some of the toughest terrains on earth. Riding toward Khardung La is surreal. The roads are mostly fine till midway, with occasional rough stretches reminding you that you are in the Himalayas.

And then suddenly, prayer flags, snow patches, bikers cheering, cameras flashing.

You truly feel on top of the world, standing at 18000 ft, experiencing the glory of the mighty Himalayas.

I did feel dizzy for a few minutes. The oxygen drops sharply at that altitude.

We paused near Army bases, watching soldiers move about their duties in extreme cold and low oxygen, places we visit for thrill, they live in for duty. We were fortunate to receive some warm water and even a comforting bowl of Maggie. Small gestures. Big gratitude. The ride till here took approximately 2 hrs.

After about 30 minutes, refuelled emotionally and physically, we moved on.

Good To Know: A permit or pass may be required to travel beyond Khardung La Pass for civilians. It can be obtained -Offline at Leh DC office, or online through the UT government portal.

Tip: Some kind hearts in Leh advised me to carry camphor. Scientifically, camphor does not increase oxygen levels, but its strong aroma stimulates nasal receptors and can create a sensation of clearer breathing. I carried some, and it helped me relax.

Nubra Valley- Sand, Silence & Camel Rides

After conquering the towering heights of Khardung La Pass, I rode onward toward Nubra Valley. But the journey itself deserves its own tale, a path woven with thrilling adventures and awe-inspiring panoramas, where dramatic landscapes unfold at every turn, icy waterfalls cascade onto the road, and riders bravely manoeuvre through them, bound together by the exhilarating spirit of the mountains. Descending into Nubra Valley feels like entering another planet. White sand dunes framed by rugged mountains, beauty in contrast. Along the way, I also found some ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) showing off their potential on the white sand dunes. You can reach a resting camp, eat and then come back for a ride or play along the way, your wish.

I remember only one shop stop on the way to Nubra for water and light snacks. If you started early with a few snacks in hand, you would reach Nubra by lunch time, we have to agree, that’s comforting!

At Nubra, enjoy:

The camel ride was slow and calming, a complete contrast to the roaring bike journey. Nubra gives you space to breathe before the next challenge.

Spend the night here. Rest well. Hydrate. Sleep early.

Good To Know: The Sign Boards, The Real Entertainment.

The Border Roads Organisation signboards in Leh deserve their own fan club.

They keep you laughing even when the roads test your patience.

Tip: There are very few eateries on this stretch. Carry:

• Light snacks
• Water bottles
• Minimal luggage

Be fully covered. The sun exposure for 6 hours straight is intense. Dust and sand fly directly at you. Riding gear is not optional — it is survival.

Take breaks every 2 hours. Or whenever your body asks for one.

Refuelling is also a challenge on these roads. Though there are tiny petrol pumps to offer you fuel. Sometimes they may be out of order or exhausted, so best to carry some extra bottled fuel, which the Bike Rentals can advise you on.

Pangong Tso- The Blue That Silences You

With the excitement to witness the endless sheet of blue, sparkling under the sunshine, I headed towards Pangong Tso Lake, the next destination. Another 6-7 hour-long ride was both an opportunity to delve into the calm and feel only my partner’s presence around. Keep the journey exciting by sharing the laughs over the hilarious signboards, praising the natural beauty and engaging with moving cattle, localites at work and taking snack breaks.

The moment you get the first glimpse of Pangong Tso Lake, your eyes get hooked. Camps and rest houses, and flags line up the lake. Pangong Tso is at an elevation of  4,225 m, stretching between India and China. The water in this lake is not fresh, but rather salty, yet it completely freezes in the winter! The science geniuses can dig up a bit on this.

We found our camp close to the lakeside, which was pretty good, with a clear lake view. It gets breezy to windy near the lake. There are no water activities or dipping allowed in the lake. The camps offer bonfire, star gazing at night and some hot food to savour.

You’ll also find the iconic yellow scooter and chairs from 3 Idiots Movie near the lake, a fun nostalgic stop.

The place is all about views, peace, and quiet conversations or fun group gatherings by the lake.

Good To Know: There are rats in Pangong Tso; make sure you do not leave food in the open. Food is simple: egg bread, Maggie, basic thalis. But when you’re sitting by that blue water, even simple food tastes unforgettable.

Tip: Throughout this trip, including Pangong Tso, phone networks are unreliable. And honestly, that disconnection feels liberating. But, keep this in mind in case you are communicating your well-being to your loved ones on the phone. Do it wherever you catch a little network and keep them informed, too.

The Ride Back to Leh

The direct ride back to Leh takes about 6–7 hours. The signboards keep guiding you to the shortest route. I found at least 2 good food stops on the way before finally touching Leh Roads.

Some broken patches lasted 1–2 hours, tiring and slightly frustrating. But by then, the mountains had already humbled me enough to accept everything calmly.

Once you reach Leh, you can stop at the bigger markets in the Leh Outskirts. I was back in Leh by the afternoon and went out for some English bakeries in the famous Leh Market in the evening.

Tip: Relax yourself exploring souvenirs in the Leh Market after the drive, taking pleasure in the vibrant, colourful surroundings and devouring scrumptuous meals.

In this Long Drive Short Trip, the road became the story, the adventure became the memory, and somewhere along the way, I returned with a piece of the mountains quietly living within me.
